    Self-organized synchronization of mechanically coupled resonators based on optomechanics gain-loss balance

    We investigate collective nonlinear dynamics in a blue-detuned optomechanical cavity that is mechanically coupled to an undriven mechanical resonator. By controlling the strength of the driving field, we engineer a mechanical gain that balances the losses of the undriven resonator. This gain-loss balance corresponds to the threshold where both coupled mechanical resonators enter simultaneously into self-sustained limit cycle oscillations regime. Rich sets of collective dynamics such as in-phase and out-of-phase synchronizations therefore emerge, depending on the mechanical coupling rate, the optically induced mechanical gain and spring effect, and the frequency mismatch between the resonators. Moreover, we introduce the quadratic coupling that induces enhancement of the in-phase synchronization. This work shows how phonon transport can remotely induce synchronization in coupled mechanical resonator array and opens up new avenues for metrology, communication, phonon-processing, and novel memories concepts.Comment: Comments are welcome

    Watersheds are Schramm-Loewner Evolution curves

    We show that in the continuum limit watersheds dividing drainage basins are Schramm-Loewner Evolution (SLE) curves, being described by one single parameter Îș\kappa. Several numerical evaluations are applied to ascertain this. All calculations are consistent with SLEÎș_\kappa, with Îș=1.734±0.005\kappa=1.734\pm0.005, being the only known physical example of an SLE with Îș<2\kappa<2. This lies outside the well-known duality conjecture, bringing up new questions regarding the existence and reversibility of dual models. Furthermore it constitutes a strong indication for conformal invariance in random landscapes and suggests that watersheds likely correspond to a logarithmic Conformal Field Theory (CFT) with central charge c≈−7/2c\approx-7/2.Comment: 5 pages and 4 figure

    Effects of salinity on survival, growth, reproductive and life span characteristics of <i>Artemia</i> populations from Urmia Lake and neighboring lagoons

    This study deals with effects of different salinities on the survival, growth, reproductive and lifespan characteristics of three Artemia populations from Urmia Lake and small lagoons at the vicinity of the lake under laboratory conditions. Experimental salinities ranged from 75 to 175 g L-1. Salinity was proved to have significant impact on the majority of the characters studied in this survey. Growth and survival in bisexual A. urmiana and parthenogenetic Artemia from Lake Urmia were significantly higher with respect to the parthenogenetic Artemia from lagoons at most of the salinities tested. Reproductive characteristics such as total number of broods, total offspring number of offspring in each brood and number of offspring at each day of reproductive period reduced with increasing salinity. Moreover higher salinity prolonged the pre-reproductive period but shortened the total reproductive period. Higher salinities also affected the percentage of encystment and post-reproductive period, showing significantly higher values in parthenogenetic populations in comparison to bisexual A. urmiana

    "Massless" vector field in de Sitter Universe

    In the present work the massless vector field in the de Sitter (dS) space has been quantized. "Massless" is used here by reference to conformal invariance and propagation on the dS light-cone whereas "massive" refers to those dS fields which contract at zero curvature unambiguously to massive fields in Minkowski space. Due to the gauge invariance of the massless vector field, its covariant quantization requires an indecomposable representation of the de Sitter group and an indefinite metric quantization. We will work with a specific gauge fixing which leads to the simplest one among all possible related Gupta-Bleuler structures. The field operator will be defined with the help of coordinate independent de Sitter waves (the modes) which are simple to manipulate and most adapted to group theoretical matters. The physical states characterized by the divergencelessness condition will for instance be easy to identify. The whole construction is based on analyticity requirements in the complexified pseudo-Riemanian manifold for the modes and the two-point function.Comment: 33 pages, 3 figure

    Conformally invariant wave-equations and massless fields in de Sitter spacetime

    Conformally invariant wave equations in de Sitter space, for scalar and vector fields, are introduced in the present paper. Solutions of their wave equations and the related two-point functions, in the ambient space notation, have been calculated. The ``Hilbert'' space structure and the field operator, in terms of coordinate independent de Sitter plane waves, have been defined. The construction of the paper is based on the analyticity in the complexified pseudo-Riemanian manifold, presented first by Bros et al.. Minkowskian limits of these functions are analyzed.     Tree-level Scattering Amplitude in de Sitter Space

    In previous papers [1,2], it was proved that a covariant quantization of the minimally coupled scalar field in de Sitter space is achieved through addition of the negative norm states. This causal approach which eliminates the infrared divergence, was generalized further to the calculation of the graviton propagator in de Sitter space [3] and one-loop effective action for scalar field in a general curved space-time [4]. This method gives a natural renormalization of the above problems. Pursuing this approach, in the present paper the tree-level scattering amplitudes of the scalar field, with one graviton exchange, has been calculated in de Sitter space. It is shown that the infrared divergence disappears and the theory automatically reaches a renormalized solution of the problem.Comment: 6 page
